Engaging people is about meeting their needs, not yours. - Tony Robbins
A quick recap of the situation in Sunday school: In the summer of my sophmore year, I offered to perform worship songs with the kids every Sunday mornings. However, this wasn't lightwork like the high school worship team at my school; the kids were not involved and they would have side conversations when I was singing the songs on the stage. I did introduce using mics and a slide show to facilitate the process, but they would still have that haggard look on their faces that hurt me deeply. I sang with one or two other ladies, but they had the ability to get the kids engaged and not me. This was what it was like for months.
Today, I decided to do something different. Still having the remnants from a cold from the day prior, I sat down in a chair and spoke with the kids.
"Instead of just playing songs, how about we converse and share anything on our mind, Bible-related or anything that stood out to you over the summer", I announced.
Some talked about watching the new Kung-fu Panda Movie and others talked about their favorite color being pink, and a coversation started. Most were shy, but we began to bond. I got more kids to sing on stage in the remaining minutes, and even when one of the kids sang off-key, I did not care. I just wanted them to be involved and some were manifesting that goal. The kids were honest and told me new song suggestions and ways to improve like adding lights to make worship a more eye-catching, enjoyable experience. This is just the beginning to reach my goal of getting all involved in the work I undertook a year ago. Things can go rough, as I clearly saw from the past, but this is just the beginning. God is working in the small room.
